A Long Time Ago …. Most everything humans did, how they slept, what they felt when they hunted, was tied to certain rhythms. Keeping time were their own, internal biological rhythms, which came to be known as Circadian Rhythm. These tempo-keepers synced beautifully with the hours of natural daylight and darkness, otherwise known as the light-dark cycle. The rhythms provided humans with an internal Circadian clock. It took Mother Nature thousands of years of fine-tuning to entrain our Circadian clocks to the 24-hour period we call a day. And all was good…for a while.
So what happened? Tinkerers like Benjamin Franklin and Alessandro Volta looked for ways harness the power of electricity. Then Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb. And while his invention solved many problems, he made people less reliant on the sun’s natural rays and light became available at all hours of the night. This confused our sleep clock, which take queues from the sunrise and sunset
Scientist have discovered this disconnect from the natural light-dark cycle, evolved to perfection over many centuries, has thrown off our Circadian clock. Simply put, we are getting insufficient light during the day and too much in the evening. The result is disrupted sleep patterns, increasing fatigue, which has come to be known as Circadian Rhythm Disorder.
Most of us have experienced the taxing effects of Jet Lag, which is an extreme case of a disrupted Circadian clock. Unfortunately, for many of us the reality is we are putting ourselves in a less severe, perpetual Jet Lag, thanks to the Circadian upheaval caused by lighting.
